Castle Mary Inscription, Roche Court

Reclaimed slate, 2001
h.180cm, w.78cm.

Influenced by Breeze’s many ‘list’ pieces Lady Bessborough commissioned this gift for her husband to fill the space left by a disused doorway. The words are all names of fields and woods from the estate of Castle Mary in Co.Cork where the Bessborough’s used to live. Although this is a personal project, the subject matter fits perfectly with Breeze’s interest in vernacular language and the way that dialect words are deeply connected to the landscape. Using Classical letterforms within the Modernist typographical device of the ‘word-map’, Breeze has reflected the architectural fusion of the new Artist’s House and the old main house found in the courtyard at Roche Court where the work is located.
