Meridian Discs - Grit-blasted black granite, 1999 Meridian detail of work

Living Lines, Millennium Gardens, Greenwich

Grit-blasted black granite, 1999
Nine discs 300cm diameter each.

Outside the Millennium Dome, astride the Meridian Line, Breeze created nine huge granite discs. Etched into these elegant new age stone circles are poems from contemporary writers from each of the nine countries through which the Meridian line passes. Many are on the theme of time and they appear in the native language and with English translations. The winning design’s success lay in the creation of a font specifically designed for the grit-blasting process, set out within a grid which was flexible enough to accomodate the varied lengths and scripts of the different poems. The grit-blasting took six weeks and was created in collaboration with sculptor Anthony Fanshawe.
