Paternosters

Cumbrian black slate, 2009

Gary draws his inspiration from the location, the land and its legends. For this location at Greve de Lecq on Jersey, he selected two linked lines of text - the names of the adjacent Paternoster rocks and The Lord's Prayer, both in Jerriais.

“The beautiful list of the names of the treacherous rocks just north of Jersey, arranged so they scan and rhyme, are carved and left unpainted, so that they seem slightly hidden behind the sailor's prayer, the two texts interwoven as they are in Jersey's maritime history”. The commission was arranged and managed by Philip Hewat-Jaboor
