Seafarer

Hewn Oak, 2008

Made during his residency at The Centre For Maritime Archaeology, University of Southampton, this extract from the Anglo-Saxon poem 'The Seafarer', deeply carved into a column of oak, was a collaborative project with medaeval tool expert Steve Woodley and was hewn using a variety of tenth century axes. The lines say:

My mind is with the sea,
Over the whale's home roaming wide
For he always has a longing he who strives on the sea
